Art Practice

Through drawing, design, object making, sound and language, a curiosity for the poetics of territory, absurdity, psychological space & natural forces have emerged: a suite of delicate quirky drawings; odd little objects left in public to be pocketed; a darkened room filled with the acts of combat & flight; tshirts narrating forces going horribly wrong; an edgy model balsa community; a multi speaker box reciting composed phrases from travel language books; electronic birds received through infra-red headphones; site-specific installations with modular intentions; squares & chairs for playful discourse; recordings, objects, images and texts that stand alone.

Creating a narrative/diagram/score has driven most projects to date, and increasingly it's developing works on paper that I am enjoying most (although it feels like it's about time to dabble in some more sculptural forms!). 'How is a space performed?' is a lingering motive. In my mind, it's nearly always about the rhythm that defines the subject, and of course, how it performs the space through placement.

My drawings tend to adopt an illustrative style to depict quirky scenarios that could very well be stills or pages plucked from an unknown source. Often they come across as a little edgy, sometimes even cute (a term I've grown to accept!) and more likely somewhat confounding, as the narrative is not always clear (& nor should it necessarily be). Due to their small scale, they tend to entice the viewer to engage in closer inspection and hopefully ponder their own tale - a theatrical directive in itself!

Animation Festivals & a bit before

It's been well over a decade since I completed an honours degree in Fine Art at RMIT majoring in sculpture, and worked at a couple of Melbourne’s more innovative publicly funded galleries. During this time I was also an active committee member and studio artist who co-managed the artist run initiative Grey Area Art Space, a gallery and studio collective supporting emerging practices in Port Phillip Arcade, right in the heart of the city (back in the days when rent was virtually free!).

A few years ago I became involved with the Melbourne International Animation Festival (MIAF). In my current role,
I work in close partnership with Executive Director Malcolm Turner to ensure the success of the festival, a national tour and associated projects - all on the smell of an oily rag!

In the course of my year I see over 1500 short animated films from around the world and play a key role in programming the Australian animation and supporting the selection jury for international programming. In this small, very close-knit team, it's a multifareous hotpot!... from managing the relationship with the screening venue, to web and print design, to importing/exporting films, coordinating volunteers & well, everything in between.

Working on the animation festivals has informed and inspired my own artistic practice, and as much as I'd love to make an animated film... there just aint time (not to mention that it would be somewhat intimidating! - a pseudonym prehaps?!)
